What is Eucalyptus Essential Oil (Globulus)?

Eucalyptus Globulus is one of the most well-known and widely used eucalyptus oils in the world. The oil is extracted from the leaves of the Eucalyptus Globulus, a fast-growing tree originally from Tasmania and southeast Australia. Its Latin name is Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil.

The clear, fresh, and slightly sharp scent of eucalyptus is globally associated with picking you up, breathing freely, and winter rituals. Add a few drops to a warm bath or vaporize it in a diffuser, and you will imagine yourself in an authentic hammam.

There are more than 900 species of eucalyptus, about 500 of which contain essential oil. Our Globulus is the most common and recognizable of the bunch, with a high content of 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which is responsible for its powerful invigorating effect.

How is Eucalyptus Globulus made?

The leaves of the Eucalyptus Globulus are harvested and processed into oil through steam distillation. This process releases the volatile aromatic compounds, which are collected and condensed into a clear, colorless to light yellow oil with a powerful, fresh scent.

The most important component is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which is present in high concentrations in this variant (often 70 to 85 percent). The oil also contains α-pinene, limonene, and γ-terpinene.

Benefits of Eucalyptus Globulus

Helps with free breathing
The fresh, cool scent of eucalyptus provides a feeling of free, open breathing. A great choice to diffuse during winter or when suffering from a cold.

Clears the mind and improves concentration
The clear, sharp scent awakens the mind and aids in concentration. A real pick-me-up as an alternative to coffee during a long workday.

Invigorates the body
When used in a massage oil, eucalyptus provides an invigorating, penetrating sensation that is great for tired or stiff muscles after sports or exertion.

Refreshes the home
Adding a few drops to homemade cleaning products based on vinegar or baking soda will make your home smell extra fresh after cleaning.

How do you use Eucalyptus Globulus?

Always dilute essential oil in a carrier oil or butter when using it on the skin. For homemade care products, we recommend an active dosage of 1 percent (1 gram per 100 grams of product).

In a diffuser
Add 3 to 5 drops to an aroma diffuser for a refreshing, uplifting atmosphere. Pairs beautifully with 3 drops of Rosemary and 3 drops of Peppermint for a focus blend.

In a steam bath
Add 2 to 3 drops of eucalyptus to a bowl of hot water. Hold your head over it with a towel over your head and breathe calmly in and out for an invigorating moment.

In a massage oil
Mix 1 percent eucalyptus into a carrier oil such as Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil. A great combination for a sports massage or for tired muscles.

In a shower scrub or bath salt
Add 1 percent eucalyptus to a homemade bath salt or shower scrub for an uplifting morning routine.

In homemade cleaning products
Add eucalyptus to a natural all-purpose cleaner or bathroom spray for a fresh scent and a purifying effect.

What is the difference from Eucalyptus Radiata?

Eucalyptus Globulus and Eucalyptus Radiata are the two most commonly used eucalyptus oils. Globulus has a higher 1,8-cineole content and is therefore more powerful and sharper in scent. Radiata is softer and milder, making it a better choice for children and sensitive users. For adults looking for a powerful refreshing effect, Globulus is the most popular choice.

Tips for using Eucalyptus

  • Store eucalyptus in a cool, dark place to slow down oxidation.
  • Always close the bottle tightly after use.
  • Test on a small patch of skin before using the oil for the first time.
  • Always work with grams and percentages, not drops. Drops vary in size and make it difficult to stay within safe limits.
  • Eucalyptus blends well with peppermint, rosemary, lavender, tea tree, and citrus oils such as lemon and orange.

Points of attention and side effects

Eucalyptus Globulus is a powerful essential oil and is not suitable for young children (under 6 years old) because of the high 1,8-cineole content, which can cause respiratory reactions in small children. Eucalyptus Radiata is a safer choice for use with children.

Always use diluted; never apply to the skin undiluted. Test on a small patch first. Avoid contact with eyes and sensitive areas. Not intended for ingestion.

Not recommended for use during pregnancy without consulting an expert. If you are using medication or are in doubt, always consult your doctor first. Keep out of reach of children.
